Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD, specializes in the surgical management of heart failure, and is an expert in high-risk cardiac surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 heart transplants — including the total artificial heart — and countless cardiac surgery procedures, including transmyocardial laser revascularization, complex valve reconstruction, and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

 

Dr. Jeevanandam has a special interest in treating patients traditionally considered inoperable. He has repaired damaged hearts in several patients awaiting transplant, enabling those patients to forgo transplantation. He also has successfully performed transplants involving patients who do not fit the standard criteria for transplant. Additionally, Dr. Jeevanandam has received national attention for his skill in performing bloodless cardiac surgery, which requires the use of precise surgical techniques to minimize blood loss during the procedure — sparing the need for a blood transfusion.

 

Dr. Jeevanandam is a pioneer in the field of mechanical circulatory assist devices. In October 2000, he was the first surgeon in the world to successfully implant the CardioVad, a revolutionary, permanent circulatory assist device that boosts heart function in patients with severe heart failure who are not candidates for transplant. He continues to be a recognized leader in the field of advanced heart failure and currently serves on the FDA Device Panel.

He is a world-renowned surgeon, having started high risk and cardiac assist programs in countries including China, India, the Middle East and South America.

 

Dr. Jeevanandam was one of the physicians’ leaders of the transplant care team that made history in December 2018 after performing two triple-organ transplants within 27 hours, replacing the failing hearts, livers and kidneys of 29-year-olds Sarah McPharlin and Daru Smith.

Dr. Ali Abdulkareem Al Obaidli is a  Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician at SEHA Kidney Care SKMC part of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company SEHA. He is the Chairman of UAE National Transplant Committee, Deputy Chair of DOH Higher Committee of Human Organ and Tissues Donation and Transplantation & member of the GCC Transplant Committee.

 

He serves at various other roles including assistant Dean of Graduate Medical Education at Khalifa University, member of the Scholarship committee of Scholarship office ministry of presidential affairs , Member of UAE Board of Medical specializations, advisory Board of Medical School at UAE University and the Fatima college of Nursing and Health sciences.

 

After completing his medical degrees from The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), he completed his post graduates studies in Toronto Canada in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Transplantation and achieved his American board and Canadian Royal college certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and United Network for Organ Sharing – UNOS certification in Transplant Nephrology. In addition to his clinical training he completed healthcare management and leadership training through the American College of Physician Executives, the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he got his Master of Public Health. He received various national awards including , Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum’s Award for Academic Excellence 2003, Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) Tamayoz Award- Young Physician Award for Clinical Care 2007 and the Abu Dhabi Medical Distinction Award 2011.

Rolf Barth, MD, is an expert surgeon specializing in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, with a focus on living donor kidney and living donor liver transplants. Dr. Barth is committed to finding innovative treatment options for liver, kidney and pancreatic disease with the goal of improving outcomes and overall quality of life for his patients. His skill, experience and unwavering dedication to enhancing care for organ transplantation allowed Dr. Barth to pioneer minimally invasive surgery for living kidney donation. He also performed the first scarless single-port laparoscopic donor nephrectomies (kidney removal), and has gone on to successfully complete this procedure over 500 times.

 

Dr. Barth is an avid researcher, with interests that span both clinical and basic research. His research laboratory has evaluated novel immunosuppressive therapies, immunologic tolerance and the use of genetically engineered animal organs for human transplantation (xenotransplantation). Dr. Barth also investigated transplant tolerance and pre-clinical models of composite facial and limb transplantation, toward the clinical goal of reconstructive transplantation.

 

His research has been published in highly respected, peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Surgery, American Journal of Transplantation, Lancet, and many others.

Sean Pinney, MD, is a leader in heart failure and cardiac transplantation. Dr. Pinney is committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care to patients suffering from advanced heart disease. He offers treatments ranging from medication to heart transplants and mechanical circulatory support, such as ventricular assist devices (VADs), to deliver long-term solutions for his patients.

 

Dr. Pinney also specializes in valvular and structural heart disease. He has a keen understanding of congestive heart failure (CHF) and the condition(s) associated with CHF, giving him the experience and skill needed for successful care of patients. He is frequently asked to offer second opinions for the most challenging cases.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Pinney is actively researching new medications and miniature devices to improve care for heart failure patients. Dr. Pinney has published more than 140 original, peer-reviewed articles in highly respected, scientific journals, including the American Journal of Transplantation, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of Cardiac Failure, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and more.

 

Dr. Pinney is not only dedicated to his patients, but he is also invested in the next generation of cardiologists. Dr. Pinney mentors’ medical students, residents and fellows, acting as an invaluable resource as they move through their medical careers.

Dr. LaMattina attended Harvard Medical School and obtained residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital. Upon completion of his transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, he arranged for additional training in living donor liver transplantation for six months in Istanbul, which was one of the largest centers in the world at that time.

 

He comes to Chicago from the University of Maryland, where he served as the Director of Living Donor Liver Transplantation and the Transplant Fellowship Director. His clinical interests focus on deceased and living donor liver transplantation and single-port laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. His laboratory efforts have centered on large animal xenotransplantation, ex vivo organ perfusion, and organ bioengineering

 

 

Dr. Shireen Hashmat is a pediatric nephrologist in Chicago, Illinois and is affiliated with University of Chicago Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Dow University of Health Sciences and has been in practice between 11-20 years.

Pediatric nephrologists specialize in kidney disease in children, treating such ailments as hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney stones and kidney failure. Nephrologists typically do not perform surgery.

Dr. Feras Bader is the Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Director of the section of Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. He is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.

 

After graduating from the University of Jordan School of Medicine in in 1998, he finished Internal Medicine Residency as well as Heart Failure and Transplant Fellowship within the Yale University School of Medicine system. In 2003, he went to the University of Utah and completed his Cardiovascular Fellowship in 2006. Upon completion of his fellowship he joined the faculty there at the Division of Cardiology. He served as the Medical Director of the Heart Failure Program at the University of Utah Hospital and the Director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Fellowship Program. During his time there, he also obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Investigation. In 2015, Dr. Bader joined the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi to pursue his ambition of building an internationally recognized advanced heart failure and transplant program in the Middle East. There, he established the first multidisciplinary heart failure and transplant program of its kind in the country and one of very few in the Middle East that can offer the full spectrum of therapies including artificial heart pumps and heart transplant.

 

Dr. Bader is American Board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Echocardiography, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology. His research interests include various aspects in ventricular assist devices, hemodynamics and cardio-renal interactions in heart failure. He has participated in many single and multi-center trials and has published several articles in peer review journals. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a Fellow of the Heart Failure Society of America.

 

Dr. Bader is the Co-Chairman of the International Heart Failure Working Group of the American Collage of Cardiology on behalf of the Middle East region. He is the Regional Chairman of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Foundation on behalf of the Middle East region as well, and the Ambassador for the Heart Failure Society of America to the Middle East.
